if this ANT-6 bomper paratropper video from the 30's is any indication of where such a phrase might have developed, I suspect its something like

 ! Seriously, you climb out, onto the wing and get all ready like a bunch of baby spiders on their mothers back and just slide off like 10,000 foot playground slide. nutty.

I like how big planes of that era were more like ships with wings. My only guess on that procedure is that the door wasn't big enough for everybody to get out quickly enough. The result would be having your paratroopers spread out over too large an area. They may also have been worried about chutes getting stuck in the doorway and damaged.

That was exactly my line of thought too, still...yikes!
